Dr Karen Purnell
Senior Technical Advisor, ITOPF, UK

Dr. Karen Purnell is a chartered chemist and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. She completed her degree and doctorate in Bristol, UK and joined ITOPF eight years ago, in 1994. Since then she has attended several major oil spill incidents in 15 different countries including, more recently, the M.V. 'AMORGOS' incident that occurred earlier last year in Taiwan. As a senior technical adviser, she is normally invited to attend on behalf of the vessel's insurers or the IOPC Fund and her role is to provide technical advice and to assist with the technical assessment of subsequent claims for compensation.
