General Manager, Australian Search and
Rescue
David
Baird is General Manager of AMSA's Australian Search and Rescue
in Canberra, which has a world-renowned search and rescue
service that spans the nation, covering 52.8 million square
kilometres of the Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans.
David first joined AMSA in 1994 as Area Manager
for Victoria and Tasmania. In 1997 he moved to AMSA's head
office in Canberra where he held a number of senior positions
including General Manager of Maritime Operations with responsibility
for, flag State ship inspection program, port State control
program, marine qualifications systems and marine pollution
response.
Before joining AMSA David was Harbour Master
in the port of Westernport (now called Hastings), which was
then Australia's largest crude oil and LPG export port.
David's seagoing career was with Ellerman
and Bucknall Steamship Co of London in passenger liners and
cargo vessels and from 1971 to 1976 with ASP Ship Management
in the Australian tanker fleet.
